Conceived and composed in collaboration with visual artist Hannah Kirkpatrick for an installation performance for the Chrysler Museum of Art’s Third Thursday performance series with the Glass Studio
Where Darkness Meets Light is a composition that deals with the loss of a loved one. Hannah Kirkpatrick’s art installation performance—involving the projection of lights and shadows onto a screen using camera obscura techniques—traces one’s recollection of this loss through distant and obscured memories, beginning with the recognition of early warning signs and proceeding through pain and eventually toward reconciliation. This musical composition follows the same trajectory and portrays those memories through musical themes that are foreshadowed and recalled throughout the work. Included throughout the movements are references to the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose music was admired by Kirkpatrick’s late father.
The Adagio movement was originally composed in 2010 as a stand-alone work entitled Adagio (for Rebecca) (my wife). The other movements were composed in 2017.
