Persevering

for oboe, violin, viola, and cello (2001)

Premiere: University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, 2001.

Duration: 12′

Persevering is my first serious attempt at composition as an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia, studying with Walter Ross. It is in three movements and is reminiscent of the late Classical/early Romantic Western musical style. The movements together create a progression in mood from agitation to plaintiveness and eventually to playfulness. The oboe has perhaps the most prominent role, but all instruments take turns leading and supporting each other as themes are passed around, imitated, and varied.
