Perseverance is a symphonic poem in one movement, although it has four distinct sections: Growth, Strife, Pain/Reconciliation, and Perseverance. The work represents a journey of development and the process of maturing, portraying how an individual might respond to a difficult or traumatic situation. While the work is not a concerto, the drum set plays a prominent, sometimes soloistic role, establishing the character and mood for different sections of the piece. Perseverance was originally composed and conducted as a master’s thesis project at the University of Maryland School of Music in 2006 and was later revised for a performance with Symphonicity in Virginia Beach.
