Singing her baby to sleep, an exhausted mother dozes herself and dreams that her baby is actually in a crib high up in a tall tree. The wind blows, the cradle rocks, and the bough breaks. Twigs snap and leaves rustle as the cradle and baby fall through the tree, but just before disaster strikes, the mother wakes up, hearing her baby crying in real life. With a yelp, she cradles her baby in her arms again and sings it back to sleep. References to “Rock-a-bye Baby” and Brahms’s Lullaby (Wiegenlied) are interspersed within this picturesque tone poem.
