The Last Invocation is a poem by Walt Whitman expressing a yearning to be freed from constraints. Kim wrote this as part of a 36-Hour composition concert challenge: Four composers each selected five musicians out of twenty from a hat, as well as a poem from another hat. Kim and his five selected musicians then had 36 hours to compose, prepare, and perform the work.
