Glimpse of Peace
for piano (2001)
Quanqiao Tong, piano.
Duration: 4.5′
In its original conception, most of the music that eventually turned into Glimpse of Peace was initially meant to portray the rustling of leaves on a peaceful autumn day. However, following the horrific attacks on September 11, 2001 that killed 2,977 people in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., it was impossible to dissociate this new composition—or really anything at the time—from the gravity of that event. It became necessary to add the opening chords in this context; and the rest of the music, rather than simply depicting peace, became a longing for an elusive state of peace in a world that was forever changed.
