Emulations
for string quartet (2004)
National Orchestral Institute Chamber Recital, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, 2005.
Duration: 7.5′
Premiere: University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, 2004.
Emulations evokes the spirit of interaction, listening, and responsiveness between instrumentalists that is essential to the art of chamber music making. The viola initiates the primary modal theme, which the other instruments “learn,” repeat, and then develop. As the piece progresses, the roles become more egalitarian as everyone listens and responds together. The joy of collaboration culminates in an exciting finish.
