Kim joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve directly out of high school, eventually becoming a sergeant before his service ended in 2005. In 2003, while a graduate student at the University of Virginia, his unit was called into active duty for Operation Enduring Freedom. Kim spent six months at Camp Pendleton, California but was never deployed to the Middle East. He wrote The Comfort of Friends: Five Songs for Horn while at Camp Pendleton, recalling various college friends and mentors whom he missed.
