As You Like It: Incidental Music
for voices, tenor recorder, violin, cello, and percussion (2004)
Duration: 21′
Premiere: University of Virginia Department of Drama, Charlottesville, Virginia, 2004.
Kim was invited to compose original music for the University of Virginia Department of Drama’s production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It in 2004. Director Betsy Tucker envisioned a fairytale-like setting with costumes inspired by traditional Turkish fashion designs. In composing his settings of Shakespeare’s written songs—including “Under the Greenwood Tree,” “Blow Thou Winter Wind,” “It was a Lover and His Lass,” and “Wedding is Great Juno’s Crown”—Kim accordingly looked to Turkish musical styles as a source of inspiration.
